About Me
Welcome to That Tutoring Teacher! My name is Karen Jansen, and I am that tutoring teacher. After 7 years of classroom teaching in grades 1, 4, and 5 I am shifting my focus to tutoring individuals and small groups of students. I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan with my boyfriend, dog Luna, and cat Koshka.
My Education
I graduated from Western Michigan University with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education with minors in Language Arts and Social Studies. I hold a valid Michigan Teacher Certificate in Elementary Education with endorsements in Early Childhood as well as Language Arts. I am in the process of getting my Master’s Degree from Ball State University in Elementary and Middle School Mathematics Education. Throughout my career, I have continued to grow my knowledge of teaching students reading and math. I have been trained in the Orton-Gillingham Multi-Sensory approach to phonics instruction, and have 7 years of experience teaching Lucy Calkins in conjunction with Daily 5 for literacy instruction. I have taught multiple math curriculums throughout my time in the classroom and have gained a deep understanding of the important skills that students need to develop in order to be successful in math.
